. this is kpix 5 news. california burning, a fierce brush fire breaks out right in the middle of a bay area city. >> i just smelled the smoke come. >> while in shout earn california tonight, a monster wild fire almost the size of san francisco is reyesing towards thousands of homes. good evening, i'm ken. >> and i'm elizabeth cook. it's only mae 3rd, but from the looks of things today, it's going to be a very long summer. we have team coverage tonight beginning with sharon chen in san jose with how close flames got to homes. sharon. >> liz, a 30-acre grass tire is fully contained tonight, and crews are going to be working overnight to bring it under control. we do want to show you how close the fire got to car traffic.

we're going to look at video here with flames burning right up the castle expressway. quite a close call there. it's only may 3 rdz, and firefighters already warden us to expect a long and dangerous fire season. this is the kind of fire we don't want to see this early in the year the billowing smoke and dancing flames the first signs something was wrong. eric rub owe and his mother lived nearby. they got worried, and so did their neighbors. >> we came as soon as we could to come see the smoke. we were scared. >> i just saw the smoke coming out of, like, the back. i was like, whoa. >> fire crew ace tack it had grass fire that broke out tonight south of east ridge mall. firefighters say they did not order any evacuation, but they tackled the flames hard and fast to prevent them from spreading the homes to the best and south. >> we wanted to make sure we made an aggressive attack on the

structure and get it knocked down pretty quick before when it's dry like this and the wind is not blowing very hard, that -- that gives us an indication that it could change direction at any time. >> because fire awareness week does not start in san jose till monday, wild land patrols staples the fire season were not available so crews hit the fire with an army of up to 70 firefighters, including cal fire. helicopters even scooped water from the lake near raging waters. today's fire makes some neighbors uneasy about the early start to fire season. >> pretty scary, yeah, because we have different communities around, you know. >> no homes burned. two people suffered spr noek inhalation but did not go to the hospital. as for the cause, investigators say they will be back here tomorrow some time in the daylight. . two southern california right now and a live look at that massive wild fire in ventura county. the burn area now covering 43 square miles. that's a live picture.

that is nearly the size of san francisco. 28,000 acre springs fire has nearly tripled in size since this morning and with the wind blowing it all over the place, tonight it is just 20% contained. the fire threatening thousands of homes in the hidden valley area, and that is where theresa garcia is stationed tonight. theresa. >> ken, good evening. you know, up until sunset, there were helicopters dipping into this lake here behind me. they were basically gathering up water to make drops over all of those flare ups. the fire officials tell me they had to order about a dozen residents and a dozen or so homes to evacuate in this hidden valley area. really, day two of this springs fire has really been a tough one. they've had to, as you were saying earlier, triple in size. the latest figures have it at 28 thousand acres with 20% contained. when the try, hot sant an winds finally shifted on shore the

weather cooled some but the flames turned around and headed inland towards more of the populated area. many residents gathered up their animals, including horses, and evacuated to safer zones. tomorrow there's an air tanker arriving. that's going to be a huge boost to all the aircraft making watt and her fire retardant drops. they've been trying to protect these homes from burning. about 15 homes have been damaged but none te stroied. it has certainly been a long day, but there is a change in thewet and her a good chance that there will be some rain by sunday. that should give the firefighters a good shot at getting an upper hand. all together the fire officials out here are telling me they're looking ahead at a toufr season throughout the state already. firefighter haves respond today more than 680 wild fires since the beginning of the year. that's a third more than average. ken, back to you. >> amazing. yeah, because we're only, you know, may right now. we still have really the bulk of the fire season still ahead of us. theresa garcia reporting live

it all. today florida lawmakers adjourned without a deal to bring the dolphins stadium up to super bowl standards, and kip doe says that's very good news for us to get the big game in 2016. >> that's because there's such bad news happening in miami. they basically have two and a half weeks to come up with $350 million to renovate their stadium, and that is why the mayor of santa clara says he's walking with a spring in his step. >> the chances of super bowl 50 coming to the new stadium have never been better, but you're not popping corks just yet, but where are you in that champagne analogy. >> i want to tell you, i have taken the foil off the cork so and started to twist. you know, the release, but i have not put my thumbs on the bottom of it. hopefully after the 21st, i'll have good reason to do so. >> the san francisco super bowl bid xhiet tee is being diplomatic. >> i would characterize what happened with the florida legislature as perhaps not a great thing for their effort. >> the economic impact report from the last super bowl is in,

live in santa clara. we asked wfor to explain how florida dropped the super bowl ball. >> well, good evening. about 7:15 eastern time here in tallahassee, the florida house adjourned without taking up the miami dolphins stadium build. the stadium renovations that were coming $350 million worth was relying heavily on public funding. it would have put a new ruf, new seats, new hd lighting and screens within the stadium and obviously put it in contention for super bowl 50 or 51 with santa clara, however, with the house not even tafking it up, that apparently is all out. apparently partisan politics playing a role here. the owner of the dolphins, steven ross, says he has no plans to move forward with any renovation. he clearly believes that is also going to affect the super bowl decision when the nfl owners meet in the end of may. that's the very latest here, kpix 5. >> there's question for you. when was the last time you ate

at the mall, in particular the nordstrom cafe at stonestown in san francisco? well, if you or anyone you know has recently, joe vasquez says you better call a doctor. joe. >> ken, health officials say it was a line cook, a food handler here at the nordstrom cafe who contacted typhoid fever and as such they've put out an advisory to alert past customers. >> it's business as usual at the nordstrom cafe downstairs at the galleria despite the health alert for typhoid fever, an extremely rare but highly contagious disease. >> most people just become mildly to moderately ill, but there is a certain small percentage of people who go onto become very ill, and there have been cases of deaths reported from this so even though each individual person is not likely to get very very sick, we do want to make sure they get diagnosed and treated if they develop any symptoms. >> symptoms include high fever, stimpains, nausea and rashes.

22 million, and 200,000 of those died so they're asking folks if you're going to go to a less-dwoched country, get that shot. >> all right. joe vasquez live from stonestown. thank you, joe. well, tonight we have an update on a story we have been reporting involving a bay area church. here's linda yee. >> kpix 5 has reported on the department of corporation's desist and refrain order filed against michael parker and pastor lay see hawkins of the general assembly church. they were accused by the state of violating securities laws in soliciting investments from church members. we want to clarify that the church was not named in the state's order, and there are no allegations against the church in the order. we also said the church was under criminal investigation. source do tell us that the investigation is limited to parker and hawkins, not the church. the attorney general's office will neither confirm nor deny
